This post nearly did not make it to this page. The reason? I’m back to the digital dark ages again. And that takes some getting used to, in 2012 A.D. It all started with a simple text message. “Total amount foreign transer: 12,000 Euro.” Sent by my bank. I had not transferred 12,000 Euro, let alone to a foreign bank account. So what does one do? Call the bank. The helpdesk lady said this was the work of hackers, who had made their way into my computer on a Trojan Horse. Nothing they could do about it, she said, since virus protection was my own reponsability. But what about that expensive anti-virus software I’d been buying for years? Alas. That Trojan Horse galloped right through it. So I blocked my account, applied for new codes and took my poor baby to the ER. “That doesn’t look good” was the first diagnosis. According to the computer doc, my hard drive was beyond repair.
Thank goodness I had a smart phone, so I could still call, mail, ping and chat and was not completely disconnected from the world. But whether it was indeed a smart thing to trust my life to that little piece of technology, I am beginning to wonder. What happened? Yesterday night, my Galaxy decided to depart this world. There I was, staring at yet another black screen. No computer, no phone. No numbers even, cause they were all in my phone memory. The back-up? On my hard drive. My calendar? In my phone. Birthdays, adresses, pictures, column ideas, even that message from that cute guy. ALL GONE. Panic! I used my land line, the only means of communication still at my service, to call my mom. Her number is the only one I know by heart. “So sorry honey”, she said. “Maybe it’s time for a good old little black book?”

They obviously had not heard our Majesty’s Christmas message, those rioters across the pond. It was a pandemonium, with police called in to keep the fighters apart. Pepper spray was used, several trouble makers were arrested. Food riots? Demonstrations? No, the launch of the latest Nike Air Jordan.
“The earth has enough for everyone’s needs but not for everyone’s desire”, our queen quoted Mahatma Gandhi. It made me think of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, my favorite children’s book.
The caterpillar has an insatiable hunger for ice cream, salami and popsicle.
I sometimes am a Very Hungry Caterpillar myself, although in my case it’s not snacks but shoes and bags that make my mouth water. The result? Boxes full of bags in every possible shape and color, 39 pairs of boots, heals, ballerina’s and sneakers (not counting flip-flops and sandals). Just like Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous, I invest in accessories. “Shoes are my hedge fund, darling!”
Do I really need them? Of course not. Pure desire.
Say what you hope and do what you can, advised our queen Beatrix. In view of the recession, which finally made its way to this part of the world, my new year’s resolution is: consume according to need.
I decided to call my friend Katarina in Athens. If there’s anyone who knows about consuming less, it’s her. “We are doing our best. I am learning to make my own medicine, we are growing are own vegetables. We aren’t going out much, we just meet at friends’. All we talk about is money. It’s become an obsession.” Katarina’s African neighbor laughs about the Greek panic. “You call this a crisis, when you can no longer buy two but just one pair of Nikes?”
Speaking about shoes: how many pairs would our queen have? And does she really need all those hats? She already said what she hopes. Now she should do what she can.

Happy New Year!

You know the type, the perfect couple. Good jobs, active citizens, nice kids, beautiful home. Jasper and Friederike van A. were such a family, that could have walked straight out of a commercial. She: fitness instructor and marriage registrar, he: director of a football stadium.
“Kind, friendly and successful”, friends of the family described him. The ideal husband. And yet, that same Jasper van A. called the police last week, telling them he killed his wife. Last week of all weeks, the Week Against Violence, Friederike van A. died, a few hours after being severely abused by her husband. Their three daughters were at home when it happened.
Your neighbor, your mother, you or me: one out of four women is confronted with violence. Still, there is a taboo on discussing violence behind the front door. As a result, only one out of five victims goes to the police.
Once upon a time, I was one of those victims, who kept her mouth shut out of shame. “Hit my head against the door” I explained my black eye. Came up with endless excuses. He didn’t mean it that way, it was the alcohol, he’s going through some hard times at work, he’ll change.
The neighbors, they looked the other way. They must have heard us fighting, see me walking hiding behind my sunglasses. But we were the perfect couple, too. And besides, why butt in? What happens behind doors is nobody else’s business, right?
When nobody opened their door when I needed help, I promised myself I would never turn a blind eye to domestic violence. Cause let’s be honest: it could happen to all of us. Even to that perfect couple.

I thought we lived in a country where everybody was free to share their opinion, even if that opinion was not shared by all. A country where you can call mosques “palaces of hatred” (as right-winger Wilders does), or that the royal family is too costly, or that soccer guru Johan Cruijff needs to retire.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (article 19), the Dutch Constitution (article 7) and the European Convention on Human Rights (article 10) are clear as glass: everyone has the right to an opinion and the freedom to share that opinion, without any interference by any public authority. Last Saturday, there turned out to be limits to that freedom.
A silent and non-violent protest of Quinsy Gario and Kno’ledge Cesare was ended forcefully, as they were wearing t-shirts that said “Zwarte Piet is racist”. (For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon of Zwarte Piet and Sinterklaas, please read my earlier post “Free Piet” ). In a shocking video posted on Youtube, we see three police officers wrestling Gario to the ground, upon which he was arrested and held for questioning for over six hours.
Is this our famous Dutch tolerance? Didn’t we have space for different opinions in the polder? Didn’t we engage in dialogue, looking for comprise and consensus?
It was already tough enough to explain this abroad: an old Turkish bisshop who arrives by boat from Spain, with his servants wearing Afro wigs and blackface telling us with a Surinamese accent that they’re black from the soot from the chimney.
The images of Gario’s arrest don’t make it any easier.
Fierce debates online: “They should stop complaining, hands off from Zwarte Piet”.
That too is freedom of speech. But apparently in the Netherlands some are more free than others.
As the old Sinterklaas song goes: “who’s good, gets candy, who’s bad, gets whipped.”

President, Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Are you familiar with the butterfly effect? Basically, it explains how something small can change it all. According to the laws of chaotic dynamics, a butterfly flapping its wings could lead to a hurricane. But then again, it could also prevent it. Being an eternal optimist, I like to focus on the latter. How can something small change it all – for the bette
Last summer, a friend of mine forwarded me an e-mail. “Will you be our woman in New York?” read the subject line. It turned out to be a job announcement from the Netherlands Women’s Council, who were looking for the next UN Women’s Representative. It had always been my dream to address the General Assembly of the United Nations, so I wrote, had an interview and here I am..

Over the past months, I have met with hundreds of women. Elderly women, girls, doctors, politicians, lawyers, housewives, hairdressers, migrant women, rural women, businesswomen, you name it.
I asked all of those women two simple questions:
-what do you think is the biggest issue for women these days?
And, most importantly:
-what could be a solution to solve that issue?

They mentioned a myriad of issues, including equal pay, women in positions of power, child care, financial litteracy, sexual and reproductive health and rights, LGBT rights, access to education and life-long learning, mobility, feminisation of poverty. Some women I met were worried about the lack of solidarity among women, others about the increasing sexualisation of society. Some talked about lack of rolemodels in politics, business and media, others about the need for gender-specific statistical data. One thing they all agreed on: it’s still a man’s world. “We live in a male pale Yale society” as one of them put it.

And they’re right. Women perform 66 percent of the world’s work, produce 50 percent of the food, but earn 10 percent of the income and own 1 percent of the property. In other words: there’s still a lot to be done! Take my country, the Netherlands. Two years ago, we ranked 9 in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap report, but now, we rank 17, right after Sri Lanka. Our current administration only counts 3 female ministers, a mere 10% of all professors are female, and only 8.1% of all corporate board room seats are held by women.

Quite a shame, really. Cause there is a direct link between increased female participation and economic growth: it is estimated that if women’s paid employment rates were raised to the same level as men’s, America’s GDP would be 9 percent higher; the euro-zone’s would be 13 percent higher, and Japan’s would be boosted by 16 percent.

It’s a fact: diversity works. Classes with an equal amount of male and female students achieve better results. Companies with women on their boards and in senior management perform better. Not surprising, in a world where women account for 85% of all consumer purchases. Diversity and inclusion are the key to a win-win situation: more equal participation and better results. Who wouldn’t sign up for that? Take football for example. Would there be any coach that would keep talented, motivated, skilled players on the bench, while putting eleven left-legged strikers on the field? I don’t think so. But like our famous former football player Johan Cruijff once said: you only see it when you get it.

New generations, new opportunities
We are at a crossroads in history. The oppressed are calling for freedom, the economy is calling for change. Our current state of affairs may be challenging, but it also offers a unique opportunity to look for new solutions. Solutions in which everyone, no matter their race, gender, class or beliefs, can fully participate and use their talents to the best of their potential. Noone on the bench!

The wind of change sweeping through North Africa and the Middle East showed us change can start small and have big consequences, especially once it’s accelerated by social media, like Twitter, Youtube and Facebook. It’s the butterfly effect 2.0! So when is that butterfly finally flapping its wings for women? Where does the she-volution start? Yes: I’m calling for a she-volution: a drastic change in our attitudes, policies and actions to improve the position of women worldwide.

The she-volution starts with a shared agenda, endorsed by governments, business, civil society and women’s networks. An agenda for change, co-created and carried out by multiple stakeholders, male and female, on a local, national and global level. From public to private, formal to informal, big to small. An agenda that maps the road towards inclusive cooperation through empowered participation. Women’s organisations play an important role in the realisation and implementation of this shared agenda. Monitoring progress, sharing best practise and making sure women’s voices are heard, at every table around the world.

According to the women I met, governments are still key stakeholders in the advancement of women. They could and should catalyse the she-volution by adopting a broad diversity agenda, which includes policy measures as well as a legal framework to make sure women get equal opportunities and enjoy equal rights, both in the workplace, in the poltical realm and in their private lives. Though most decision makers in my country (not surprisingly mostly men) don’t agree, quota prove to be a succesfull tool in achieving equal representation of women in politics as well as the corporate world.

But governments can not and should not operate alone. The she-volution needs more allies. Public-private partnerships are needed to create sustainable solutions for women, such as diversity procurement, equal pay and equal representation from work floor to board room, but also: mobility, child care, a safe working environment and equal opportunities for training and education. The Women’s Empowerment Principles, developed by the UN Global Compact and UN Women, provide an excellent set of tools for companies to become more inclusive.

The women I met mentioned many practical solutions to improve the position of professional women worldwide, such as appointing not one but two women whenever there’s a board room seat available. Cannot find suitable candidates? Ask a woman already in a position of power to share her network. Promote telecommuting and flexible working hours. Involve women-owned businesses in the company’s supply chain. Small yet effective steps to boost women’s participation worldwide.

But most importantly: we need to remember the butterfly effect that shows us change can start with something small. It could be as simple as lending a woman a helping hand. Vote for a woman, ask women to speak at your next event, donate your time, money or expertise to a women’s organisation, promote women where possible. Maybe you are that butterfly flapping its wings, just like my friend who forwarded me the job announcement that eventually brought me here.
We’ve come a long way since the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was adopted 32 years ago. My grandmother never had a chance to finish school. My mother did, and inspired me to do the same. But there are still too many women who do not have that chance, who don’t have equal access nor equal opportunities. Their voices deserve to be heard!

So what I ask of you today is when you leave this room, please take a few moments to think what YOU can do to be that butterfly flapping its wings for women. Talk about it, tweet about it and most of all: just do it. “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world”, said Margaret Mead. I say: Viva la she-volution!

Years ago Oprah did a show on random acts of kindness, unexpected good deeds, doing something nice for a total stranger.
Today, the random act of kindness seems to be on the rise. Recently, there was massive hugging in the streets of Amsterdam, as part of the Free Hug campaign, which originated from Australia in an anwer to social disconnectivity and lack of human contact. The idea is simple: write “free hugs” on a piece of cardboard, position yourself in a busy shopping street and open your arms. It happened to my mom in the city of Utrecht last year. “You’ll never guess what just happened: I was hugged by a nice young man!”. Beautiful right? Hugging a stranger for worldpeace.
In New Zealand, September 1st is National Randam Act of Kindness Day. Everyone is called upon to do something kind for their fellow citizens. The official website suggests paying for the movie tickets for the person standing in line behind you, sending a pizza to your local hospital reception, take a box of donuts to your local police station, mowing your neighbor’s lawn when they’re at work or offering to help carry someone’s groceries.
But you can also think bigger. Last Sunday, there was a fundraiser iftar held in Amsterdam. Started with a message on Facebook, it quickly turned into a huge event which ended up raising 25 thousand Euro for Somalia. “Cause isn’t that what Ramadan is all about, solidarity with the hungry?” said one of the organisers.
Speaking of Ramadan, this week Muslims celebrate Eid al Fitr, the ending of fasting. Another great occassion for a random act of kindness: baking cookies for your fasting friends, neighbors or co-workers.
One warning though: kindness is contagious. So know what you’re getting yourself into!

Slut. A nasty word that seems to pop up more and more often. On soccer fields for example.
First it was “homo”, now words like “ho”, “slut” and “bitch” fly over the pitch just like that.
I’ve also had an occasional “slut” thrown at me, walking down the street wearing heels and a dress. It used to piss me off, but these days, I let it slide. Slut is no longer just a swear word, it’s also a new sobriquet for women who’ve had enough of being judged by their appearance. I’m one of them.
After Toronto, London, Seoul and New Delhi, last Saturday women in Berlin took to the streets for a Slut Walk. Around a thousand self-proclaimed sluts joined in their mini-skirts, stockings and even wearing nothing at all, to protest against the widespread notion that women wearing sexy outfits “are asking for it”.
The slut movement started in Canada, after a cop advised women to dress less “like sluts”. The city of Rome went even further and issued a flyer on street safety which suggested women should not wear short skirts. According to an Indian police commisioner women are better off not going out on the streets at night at all.
The world upside down, if you ask me. Let’s go after the perpetrators of sexual violence, rather than blaming the victims.
Still, not everyone agrees. Recent research in the UK showed that more than half of the interviewed women think that victims are partly responsible for being raped. Dancing, sexy outfits, flirting: sluts “are asking for it”.
I for one believe noone is asking to be raped, whether wearing a burka or a bikini. So I say: sluts (m/f) of the world, unite! Cause no still means no, you know.

I’ll admit it: deep inside I sighed with relief when the man behind the cruel attacks in Norway turned out not to be a Muslim fundamentalist, but a self-proclaimed crusader. And I was not the only one. “Everyone immediately thought it was an Islamist attack, they pointed the finger at us”, a Moroccan Norwegian told Al-Jazeera. Right after the breaking news came in, terrorism experts were ready to share their theories. Norway was supposedly on Al Qaeda’s black list, because of a pending extradition of an Iraqi Mullah, the publication of the Danish cartoons and the Norwegian troops in Afghanistan.
It made me think of that day in May 2002, when I was in Cuba, on the phone to the home front, hearing about the murder of Dutch populist Pim Fortuyn. “Don’t tell me it was a..” “No”, my mom said. “His name is Volkert”.
Two years later I got a call while I was living in Tunisia. “Have you heard? Theo van Gogh has been stabbed to death!” And again, that same question. It wasn’t.. was it?
Polarisation is a dangerous poison. It turns people into monsters. Hopefully, tomorrow’s leaders of the Utøja generation will have enough antidote to meet the future with an open mind. Without fear, without hate, without poison.
Last week I met with Dutch youth throughout the country for a project. We talked about their dreams, hopes and the state of affairs in our country. What they’re proud of? That there’s room for everyone in the Netherlands. Even though they see an increase in fear for “the other”, the vast majority of the kids I spoke are not worried about our future. Multicultural society? No problem! “We’re in this together, anyway” , said one of them. Indeed, we are.

It’s the week of balzy women. Former French Minister of Finance Christine Lagarde taking over from Dominique-it-wasn’t-me-Strauss Kahn at the IMF, against whome French author Tristane Banone finally decided to press rape charges. Go ladies!

Speaking about balzy women: did you know the Worldcup Women’s Football is being played as we speak? In Berlin, where I was attending the Humanity in Action annual conference and giving a workshop on diversity and inclusion with Jamila Aanzi, there was no escaping it.

“Heute abend Frauenfußball live!”. In Berlin most bars have big screens, showing the World Cup live and direct. Ads on busses, billboards, not to mention the sticker book with female players launched by Panini, which proved to be a huge success.

How different are things in Holland. Both media and market are turning a blind eye to women’s football. World Cup? Whatever. No, we’d rather watch Wimbledon or the Tour de France. Women’s football is “not commercially interesting.” For the same reason, the Dutch women’s league was even under pressure. Willem II and AZ, whose ladies won the championship three times in a row, said they no longer had the budget to support professional women’s football, which costs a team about 200 K per year. Much too expensive, said AZ director Toon Gerbrands.

Two years ago, the semi-final of the European Women’s Championship in Finland drew 1,6 million viewers (out of which 63% were men). It was the first time that a European women’s football match was broadcast live on Dutch public television. Women’s football not commercial? It’s a classic case of chicken and egg, if you ask me. Without media coverage, no sponsors, without sponsors, no income.

Speaking about income: women make considerably less than their male colleagues. The world of professional football is no exception. Brasilian football queen Marta signed a 3-year contract with Los Angeles Sol for over a million euro, and is the world’s best paid female soccer player. But her salary is peanuts compared to the astromical amounts Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi or Wesley Sneijder are being paid each year.

It’s clear: it’s still a man’s world. But like good old Johan Cruijff once said: you only see it when you get it. Long live balzy women!
